January 06 Un año más - Once moreOtra vez, tras las vacaciones navideñas en España, nos disponemos a regresar a la realidad cotidiana. Tras el receso, en cierto modo irreal, volvemos a las tareas diarias. Digo irreal porque cuando vives fuera de tu país, y vuelves por temporadas, todo está casi como parado en el tiempo; cierto que algunas cosas cambian, la gente cambia, los programas de la tele cambian, pero en general, todo sigue igual. La vida sigue pero sin ti. Los Ángeles, tras dos semanas en España queda lejos, pero en el fondo echo de menos mi vida allí, y se me encoge el corazón al dejar mi vida en España otra vez. Una vida, que ahora me da la sensación que es prestada por 14 días. Y sé que tras unos pocos días de vuelta en casa, la España que tanto añoro volverá a quedar demasiado lejos. Es una sensación extraña, y difícil de explicar.
Gracias a la familia y los amigos ese distanciamiento no es tan dramático, por eso agradezco a todos los que me ayudan a guardar mis origenes, mis recuerdos pasados, presentes y futuros y mi vida en España... vivos cada día.
Con un montón de sentimientos encontrados me despido hasta la próxima. Estoy seguro que os echaré de menos.

Once more, after the Christmas Holidays in Spain, we're ready to go back to the every-day reality. After the break, somehow irreal, we'll be back to our normal lives. I mean irreal in a sense that when you live abroad, and come back once in a while, everything looks like trapped in a time capsule; of course some things change, people change, TV shows change... but in the end, it all stays the same. Life goes on, but without you. After two weeks in Spain, now L.A. seems far, although deep inside I miss my life over there, it hurts leaving my life in Spain once again. A life that seems to be lent to me just for 14 days. And I know that after a few days back at home, the life in Spain that I miss so much will be distant once again. It's a weird feeling, and hard to explain.
Thanks to family and friends that distance is not as dramatic, that's why I am grateful to everyone that helps me keep my roots, past, present and future memories and my life in Spain... alive every day.
With lots of mixed feelings I say so long, until next time. I am sure I'll miss you all.

David & Heidi July 25 Viaje a Colorado y Wyoming

He salido en la mañana desde el aeropuerto de Burbank con destino a Denver, CO. Al llegar allí cogí un coche y conduje durante una hora hacia el norte del estado de Colorado para finalmente llegar a Fort Collins.
Fort Collins, es la ciudad que alberga la universidad estatal de Colorado (Colorado State University) que será donde acuda durante esta semana para asistir a un curso sobre análisis de viabilidad de semillas.
El lunes hicimos las presentaciones, conocí a Ethan, que es el jefe de laboratorio de semillas de Colorado State University, y resultó que había otras dos personas de Monsanto, Ryan y Rachel, del laboratorio en Waterman, IL. También Shannon y Dereck de Midwest Seeds en Dakota del Sur.
Básicamente hemos visto teoría y practica de casi todas las familias que nos ocupan. También hemos ido de restaurantes, de bares y una tarde Ryan, Rachel y yo fuimos a hacer senderismo por las afueras de Fort Collins, donde hay una reserva de agua enorme y también la posibilidad de hacer recorridos por senderos.
El jueves, fue de destacar, estuvimos en Fort Collins la mitad del día, y después de la comida, todo el grupo fuimos a visitar unos laboratorios de germinación y análisis fitopatológocos de semillas y plantas. Más tarde el mismo jueves, fuimos a visitar El Parque Botánico de Denver. Una pasada. Tienen especies de todo el mundo y en especial de Asia central, puesto que el clima es parecido al de Colorado, pero han conseguido adaptar otras muchas especies que ni se imaginaban que podrían vivir en un clima como el de Denver. Además, fue una visita privada para nuestro grupo, una vez que el parque había cerrado al público y con cena incluida dentro de las instalaciones del parque. He de añadir que tienen un invernadero enorme con especies tropicales y una colección de orquídeas impresionante.
El viernes, por otra parte, las clases terminaron a mediodía y todos se fueron, unos conduciendo y otros al aeropuerto, yo como tenía mi vuelo para el sábado pues decidí a provechar para irme a visitar Cheyenne, la capital del estado de Wyoming (Guayoming) ya que no se si voy a tener la posibilidad de volver por ahí pronto, y al menos ya puedo decir que he estado en Wyoming. No hay mucho de todas formas.
Ya estoy en el avión de vuelta hacia Burbank, CA y pronto estaré en casa y dará fin a mi aventura en Fort Collins, CO, Denver, CO y Cheyenne, WY.
Trip to FortCollins, CO
Sunday July 16th, 2006 I left today in the morning from Burbank Airport to Denver, CO. Upon my arrival in Denver I picked up a rental car and drove for one hour north of Colorado to finally arrive in Fort Collins. Fort Collins is the city where Colorado State University is located. And it will be there where I will be attending the Seeds Viability Analysis. On Monday we got introduced to the group and I met Ethan who is the Seed Lab Manager for Colorado State University. And it happened to be two more people from Monsanto besides myself, Ryan and Rachel, from Waterman, IL. There I also met Shannon nd Derek from Midwest Seeds in South Dakota. Basically we’ve gone through the theory and practice on every important family for seed testing. We’ve also experienced the restaurants and bars on the site. One afternoon Ryan, Rachel and I went out hiking outside Fort Collins, where there’s a huge water reservoir and trails. I have to talk about Thursday, we spent half the day in Fort Collins but alter lunch the whole group went to visit some seed germination and analysis labs. Later on that same evening we went to visit the Denver Botanical Gardens… awesome! They have plants from all over the world and specially central Asia where the weather is similar to Colorado’s, but they have also been able to adapt some other species that they didn’t even believe they could thrive in a weather such as Denver’s. Moreover, it was a private visit son we came in when all the public was getting out and there was a dinner included with the visit inside the facilities. On Friday, on the other hand, the course ended at noon. Everybody left Fort Collins but I had my flight for Saturday afternoon so I decided to go to Cheyenne, the capital of the State of Wyoming I had never been there and I didn’t know when I would have the opportunity to come back. There’s not much though but just for the heck of it. I am already on the plane heading to Burbank, CA and soon I’ll be back home and my adventure to Fort Collins, Denver and Cheyenne will soon be over. July 09 Fiesta de Inauguración de la casa - Home Warming PartyAyer tuvimos la fiesta de inauguración de la casa en la que nos mudamos a penas hace 8 meses y medio. Al final podemos decir que ya va tomando forma y decidimos celebrarlo con amigos y familiares--para poder enseñar a todo el mundo donde nos hemos estado metiendo en los últimos meses en que no se nos ha visto el pelo. Por fin muchos han podido ver el fruto de nuestro esfuerzo, dedicacion y ya fuera entre semana o fines de semana afanados en terminar con lo más importante de la casa.
Al final fuimos 40 personas incluyendo a Heidi y a mí. De manera que no nos falto gente para animar la fiesta. De menú... Ensalada, tortilla de patata, bocadillos mexicanos (tortas

Yesterday we had the Home Warming Party after 8 months and a half that we moved here. At the end we can assure that everything is coming all together, so we decided to celebrate with friends and family--everybody could see where we have been hiding during the past months that nobody has seen us around. Finally, many people were able to see the progress and our dedication to the house. No matter if it was week days or weekends always eager to finish at least the major part of the house.
We were 40 of us yesterday including Heidi and myself. That means that we had enough people to lighten up the party. As a menu we had... Salad, Spanish potato omelet, Mexican Sandwitches (tortas

March 14 O Fogo de ChãoHace ya unas semanas que, por mi cumpleaños, fuimos a uno de los mejores restaurantes brasileños fuera de Brasil llamado O Fogo De Chão en Beverly Hills. Se trata de un menú tipo bufet que consta de un bar de ensaladas excelente y luego diversos tipos de corte de carne servidos al estilo brasileño llamado espeto corrido o en español... servicio continuo.
Las carnes estan sazonadas y asadas a la llama a fuego lento para que su sabor sea el auténtico, servido en espadas y te los cortan en la mesa, tal y como los Gauchos preparan la carne en Brasil.
Lo recomiendo, la cena cuesta $53.50 por persona mas $2.00 de aparcacoches. Claro que el precio no es para ir todos los dias pero merece la pena por darse un gustazo de cuando en cuando.

Several weeks ago, for my birthday, we went to one of the best Brazilian restaurants outside Brazil called O Fogo de Chão in Beverly Hills. It's a bufet with a great quality salad bar, and a selection of the best meat served featuring the Brazilian style called espeto corrido or, in English continuos service.
Meats are seasoned to perfection and slow-roasted over an open flame to capture their individual flavors. The cuts are presented on skewers and carved tableside, Gaucho style.
I highly recommend it. Dinner is $53.50 per person, plus $2.00 valet parking. I agree it's pricy and it's not an everyday restaurant but it's worth it to go once in a while to enjoy.

Diversas semanas há, para meu aniversário, nós fomos a um dos melhores restaurantes brasileiros fora do Brasil chamado O Fogo de Chão em Beverly Hills. É um bufet com uma barra de salads de moi boa qualidade, uma seleção da melhor carne servida caracterizando o estilo brasileiro chamado espeto corrido.
As carnes saçonadas à perfeição e asadas ao fogo lento sobre uma flama aberta para capturar seus sabores individuais. Os cortes são apresentados em espadas e cortados na mesa, estilo de Gaucho.
Eu recomendo-o altamente. O jantar é $53,50 por a pessoa, mais o estacionamento $2,00. Eu concordo que é caro e não é um restaurante diário mas é bom para ir uma vez em um quando para apreciar.

March 06 GraciasGracias a todos por vuestras muestras de apoyo tras el robo de nuestra casa. Esperamos esta semana poner la alarma, para poder dormir tranquilamente de nuevo y no volver a casa con las psicosis de que nos han vuelto a robar, por raro que parezca, las estadisticas dicen que los cacos vuelven tras tres semanas en un 60% de las ocasiones..
I want to thank everybody for all your support after our home burglary. We hope that by the end of this week we can finally install the alarm, so that we can sleep in peace and don't have to come back home every day thinking that they have broken into again, even though it seems unbelievable, statistics say that thieves come back after three weeks in 60% of the times.
March 03 Pasadena, CaliforniaHablar de Pasadena, es nombrar una de las ciudadades más atractivas, para mi gusto, del condado de Los Angeles en California, EE.UU. Desde que llevo visitando California ha sido uno de los sitios en los que me he encontrado más a gusto. Además he tenido la suerte de vivir en pasadena por los ultimos casi dos años junto con mi mujer, y la verdad es que nos encanta. Ahora que ya no vivimos en Pasadena, siempre que podemos vamos. Yo destacaría Old Town Pasadena, la parte antigua de la ciudad, con edificios de arquitectura de principios del siglo 20 a lo largo de un buen tramo de Colorado Blvd. Esta zona recuerda, o mejor dicho, se asemeja un poco a Europa en cuanto a que la gente pasea por la calle, hay terrazas en las aceras y tambien tiendas, restaurantes y otras cosas que merecen la pena simplemente por darse un paseo. Los fines de semana hay gente por la calle hasta las 12 ó la 1 de la madrugada, cosa es que bastante poco común por aquí. Es para destacar el ayuntamiento de la ciudad de arquitectura hispano-italiana, que aunque está en obras hasta el año que viene, merece la pena incluso desde fuera. También, en Colorado Blvd, hay un centro comercial bastante nuevo llamado Paseo Colorado en el que se pueden encontrar otro tipo de opciones en restaurantes, tiendas e incluso eventos culturales como por ejemplo un festival de dibujos con tiza en el suelo, música en directo... etc. Todavia hay mucho que descubir en Pasadena, así que si alguien conoce algun ricón de la ciudad por donde sea recomendable pasar, no dudéis en hacérmelo saber. Un saludo To mention Pasadena, is, in my opinion, to talk about one of the most attractive cities in Los Angeles County, in California, USA. Since I´ve been visiting California it's been one of the places that I've found myself more confortable. On top of that I'be been lucky to live in Pasadena almost for the past 2 years with my wife, and to be honest, we love it. Although we no longer live in Pasadena, we go as much as we can. I'd highlight Old Town Pasadena, the city's oldest part, with buildings from the early 20th century's architecture along a good segment of Colorado Blvd. This zone reminds you, or better said, it looks a little bit like Europe with people walking along the sidewalk, with restaurants, cafes and shops that make it worth it just to visit for a walk. During the weekends there are always people hanging out until 12 or 1 at night, which is not quite common around here. It's a must to emphasize Pasadena’s City Hall with Spanish-Italian architecture and even though it's under renovation until next year, it's worth it even to visit from the outside. Also in Colorado Blvd. There’s a quite new mall called Paseo Colorado in which you can find other options regarding restaurants, shops and even cultural events like a street chalk festival or live music outdoors… etc. There’s a lot yet to discover in Pasadena, so if anybody knows about any place in Pasadena that is worht to mention and visit. February 22 De lo que nos paso a Heidi y a mí el lunes 13 de febreroHoy, casi semana y media después, voy a hablar de algo terrible que le puede pasar a alguien cuando acaba de comprar una casa, aún no había comentado esto con nadie puesto que no lo sabía nuestra familia en España. Ahora todo ha vuelto a la normalidad, dentro de lo que cabe, pero no sin haber pasado un mal trago.
El caso es que el lunes dia 13 de febrero, Heidi estaba trabajando desde casa, y en el período de 3 horas (de las 11 a las 14) en las que ella salió a la oficina de correos y a hacer unas compras, alguien entró a robar a nuestra casa. Debió ser algo rápido porque nadie vio nada. Sospechamos que saltaron el muro que hay en la parte de atrás de nuestro jardín y también creemos que debían haber estado vigilando por un tiempo porque sabían que la ventana de la cocina no tenía echado el cerrojo. Rompieron la mosquitera, abrieron la ventana y entraron por la cocina. Revolvieron todos los cajones de las 3 habitaciones (iban buscando dinero, claro) vaciaron completamente el joyero de Heidi, se llevaron el ordenador portatil del trabajo de Heidi y también nuestra cámara digital (gracias a que se me ocurrió descargar las fotos el otro día--claro de ahi que la camara no estuviese guardada). Bueno, en resumen y hablando en plata UNA PUTADA. Salieron por la puerta del jardin como que nada hubiese pasado.
Cuando Heidi volvió a casa se dió un susto de muerte al ver todo en el estado que quedó y comprobar que prácticamente todo lo que se habían llevado era suyo. Claro, el drama vino después, Heidi me llamó al trabajo, salí pitando mientras ella llamaba a la policía, vinieron, le tomaron declaración y por la noche vino una inspectora a tomar huellas digitales--dicen que tardan tres meses, yo he visto que en CSI lo hacen en una noche... (es broma, para quitar hierro al asunto)
Ahora todo esta volviendo a la normalidad, con algunas cosas materiales menos, con un poco mas de inseguridad y claro es cuando te das cuenta de lo que realmente importa en la vida. Heidi, gracias a Dios no estaba en casa cuando pasó y nos tenemos el uno al otro para apoyarnos en los momentos duros. El resto... jode que alguien entre a tu casa y te robe, pero al final son cosas materiales lo importante es lo que queda después de eso.
Today, almost after a week and a half later, I am going to talk about something terrible that can happen to anybody after buying a house, I had not commented this with anybody yet since our family in Spain did not know about it. Now everything is coming back to normal, after what happend and not to mention the hassle of going through something like this.
The fact is that on Monday February 13th, Heidi was working from home, but she stepped out for 3 hours (from 11am to 2pm) when she left to the post office and went shopping, somebody broke into our house. It had to be fast because nobody saw anything. We suspect that they jumped the back wall of our garden and also we think that they must have been watching over a time because they knew that one of the kitchen windows was unlocked. They tore apart the window screen, opened the window and entered though the kitchen. They went though all the drawers in the 3 bedrooms (they were looking for money, of course), they emptied Heidi's jewelery box completely, they also took Heidi's work laptop computer and our brand new digital camera (thanks that I happened to have downloaded all the photos the other day -- of course that's why the camera was on the desk). Well, to sum up, and excuse my French, we were FUCKED. They left through the garden door as if nothing had happened.
When Heidi came back home she got so scared to see everything that had happened and realize that practically everything they had taken was hers. Of course, Heidi called me at work, right away, and I left at that moment while she was calling the police, they came, made a report and at night an inspector came to take fingerprints -- they say that it takes three months for the results, Ive seen that in CSI they just do in one night... (just kidding).
Now it's all turning back to normal, with some material things less and a little bit of insecurity but it's now when you realize what's really important in life. Heidi, thank God, was not at home when all this happened and we have each other to support one another when things don't go well. Regarding the rest... it sucks that somebody breaks into your house, but at the end, those are material things the important thing is what's left after that. February 16 Mi primera entradaEs la primera vez que escribo en mi blog. Espero que de ahora en adelante pueda dedicar algunos minutos a la semana para escribir lo que se me ocurra. Ya faltan sólamente 9 d ías para mi cumpleaños. Es un jueves normal. Sólo deseando que llegue el fin de semana y seguir con las obras de casa para poder terminar de instalarnos, hace ya 3 meses que nos hemos trasladado. El piso de arriba esta prácticamente terminado, y abajo solamente me queda pintar el salón la cocina, poner el suelo nuevo y el rodapié. Calculo que para finales de marzo o principios de abril podamos llegar a casa y que no parezca un almacen de muebles sino un lugar que se asemeje a una casa.
This is the first time that I post something in my blog. I hope that from now on I can spend a few minutes a week to write whatever pops up in my mind. My birthday is just 9 days away. It's a regularThursday. I'm just looking forward to the weekend to keep working on the remodel of our home and finally settle down, it's been already 3 months since we moved in. The upper floor is finished and downstairs there's only the living room and the kitchen left to be painted, lay the new floor and install the molding. I estimate that by the end of March or beginning April we'll be able to get home and it won't look like a storage area full of furniture but a place that looks like a house. |
